Die Autonome Provinz Trient deckt sich mit der historischen und geografischen Region Trentino: Einst war sie ein langobardisches Herzogtum, dann ein halbunabhängiger Staat unter der Herrschaft des Fürstbischofs von Trient im Heiligen Römischen Reich Deutscher Nation (11.–19. Jahrhundert) und schließlich etwa ein Jahrhundert lang (1818–1918) der italienischsprachige südliche Teil Tirols im Österreichisch-Ungarischen Reich.

Das Val Rendena (auf Deutsch „Rendena-Tal“) ist eines der wichtigsten Tourismuszentren im Trentino, wobei der Ferienort Madonna di Campiglio eine herausragende Rolle spielt.
Zudem ist es das einzige Tal weltweit, in dem sich große Gebirgszüge befinden, die geologisch gesehen völlig unterschiedlichen Ursprungs sind.

Tatsächlich wird die Landschaft im westlichen Teil des Val Rendena von großen Gebirgsgruppen geprägt, wie der Adamello-Gruppe mit ihrem gleichnamigen Gletscher und der Presanella-Gruppe, die beide aus tonalitischem Diorit (Granit) bestehen.

Auf der linken Seite hingegen wird die Landschaft von der Gebirgskette der Brenta-Dolomiten dominiert, die aus Dolomit, d. h. doppeltem Kalziumkarbonat und Magnesium, besteht.
Im Trentino herrscht eine enorme Vielfalt an Flora und Fauna: Das Trentino bietet eine so äußerst abwechslungsreiche Landschaft, dass gerade aus diesem Grund und wegen seiner natürlichen Schönheit ein Großteil des Trentino zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde.


Die wichtigsten Tourismuszentren sind bergig geprägt und eignen sich sowohl für den Sommer als auch für den Winter. Madonna di Campiglio, das wie der Bug eines Schiffes über dem Tal thront, ist das touristische Zentrum, in dem sich die bedeutendsten Sommer- und Winterferienorte befinden: einzigartig auf der Welt, umgeben sowohl von den Brenta-Dolomiten mit ihrem ewigen Schnee als auch von den Granitmassiven des Adamello und der Presanella.
